KCFC Announces Construction Start Date

Buildout of Coral Street storefront to begin April 23, 2018

With final permits and contracts in-hand, Kensington Community Food Co-op is proud to announce that construction of Kensington’s first member-owned grocery store, café, and bar will begin on April 23, 2018.

Construction begins April 23,2018

The announcement follows a vote by the KCFC Board of Directors last Thursday, which authorized the signing of contracting agreements with Lyon Contracting Services LLC, who will operate as the project’s general contractor overseeing all construction-related activities.

Timing for the vote could not have been better. Earlier that same day, KCFC also received the finalized city permits with the approval to begin construction. Studio 6mm has been a close partner of KCFC for some time, providing architectural design services on the project.

With both GC contract signed and permits now in-hand, KCFC can now march full steam ahead towards the buildout of our 2000 sq. ft. member-owned grocery store, bar, and café located at 2670 Coral Street. Buildout is expected to take six months.

The Board’s unanimous “Yes!” vote represents the years of tireless dedication, passion, and hard work started by a few like-minded neighbors back in 2008, who then were looking for a way to create something good that could help nurture the community.

Today, that vision has grown and been shared by a base of over 860 member-owners, along with the thousands of neighbors who live in Kensington, Fishtown, Port Richmond, and beyond.

KCFC would like to thank the many folks who’ve shared in this moment becoming reality:

  • Every member-owner, who has joined KCFC and invested in this idea
  • Our volunteers, who have brought KCFC to life in the community
  • GM Mike Richards and the KCFC Board of Directors, for steering the ship
  • Our business partners, whose generosity has helped KCFC grow and shine
  • Friends in cooperative business community, whose collective experience, advocacy, and insight have helped guide KCFC over the years
  • The City of Philadelphia, for its continued support and resources
  • Every project funder, large and small, whose financial commitment has made this possible

Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.
