Philadelphia Sculpture Gym

We wanted to learn more about our new neighbors and friends at the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym on Frankford Ave. They've graciously agreed to host our general membership meeting on 5/5. So, without further ado, our five questions for Sculpture Gym co-founder Darla Jackson

Why would a co-op grocery store work in Kensington?
Because the choices we have right now are not ideal (ahem, Superfresh or Thriftway). I think that having a real choice as to what types of food are available and affordable is really important in a neighborhood, and something that people often don't consider or just take for granted. I think people here are excited to make that choice!

What about the co-op model attracted you when opening the Sculpture Gym?
I definitely think there is strength in numbers. The group of volunteers and Charter Members that has come together to support the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym has been incredible. Between us all, we have people who are well versed in wood working, metal working, mold making, casting, organization, IT, etc. Between us all, I feel like we could do anything.

What is your favorite thing about being located in 19125?
I love that this area is so motivated. There are tons of new small businesses popping up, lots of artists, great community organizations doing great things. Its a very inspiring place to be!

What is you favorite Shop Local Business?
Ahhhh...this is a hard one because there are so many great places on that list! I'd have to say Greensgrow. They've brought the neighborhood a great CSA program and turned their lot into an amazing space.

What is you favorite vegetable?
Kale, hands down. I'd eat it all day, every day.

The Philadelphia Sculpture Gym is a community based sculpture workshop that operates like a gym membership. Sculptors, craftspeople and makers of all kinds pay a monthly membership fee to gain access to woodworking, metal working and moldmaking/casting shops. We also offer group classes, storage and studio space, and one on one personal training. Our goal is to create a safe, affordable space for artists to make their work and help them get it out into the world. We also have an onsite gallery with rotating monthly exhibitions, that offers lots of opportunities for our members to show
