KCFC Breaks Ground on Coral St. Storefront

Groundbreaking ceremony included local news media, elected officials, project partners, and several key funders in recognition of KCFC’s accomplishment.

On Monday, Kensington Community Food Co-op held a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of the future Coral St. storefront. The day marks a historic moment for the Co-op, the Riverwards community, and the city of Philadelphia.

With this ceremony, KCFC is now entering the project’s construction phase to retrofit its gutted building on 2670 Coral St. into a full-service, member-owned grocery store and café.

To-date, KCFC has raised $1.5 million towards this endeavor.

Speakers from within KCFC, elected officials, and the Co-op’s partners added commentary to the moment, sharing their thoughts on this moment and what the Coral St. storefront represents to our community—greater access to local and affordable food, creation of jobs, stimulating the local economy through cooperative business, programming and events, and establishing a new engine for social good and civic engagement serving the Riverwards neighborhoods.

Speakers included:

  • Holly Logan, KCFC, Board President
  • Mike Richards, KCFC, General Manager
  • State Representative Mike O’Brien
  • Donna Leutchen Nuccio, Reinvestment Fund, Director, Healthy Food Access - Lending & Investments
  • Yvonne Boye, Philadelphia’s Department of Commerce, Senior Director of Neighborhood Economic Development
  • David Quadrini, Studio 6mm, Principal

In the coming weeks, KCFC will share additional details about the construction phase including the selected contractors and timeline to store opening.

KCFC would like to thank all of our supporters, the KCFC Board of Directors, and the entire base of 800+ member-owners at large who together have made this day possible.
