Shop Local Spotlight: Affordable Skincare

A cheery turquoise storefront!
A happy staff of skincare maestros!
A quaint comfy waiting room, with really good magazines!
And then there is that straightforward business name--Affordable Skincare.

These are just a few of the many reasons KCFC is in love with Mary Freihofner of Affordable Skincare and her truly fantastic staff. Mary is one of those folks who set up shop in our area when, well, people weren't setting up shops in this area. A pioneer? Definitely. A KCFC member? She's that too. The best thing about Affordable Skincare is the combination of neighborhood friendliness and really top-notch services. We are excited to shine our Spotlight on Mary and Affordable Skincare this week!

 1. What is your shop all about? What do you offer and what's your favorite thing that you do?

Our Salon’s focus is on skin care facials that address and improve a person's skin with quality organic products and educated Estheticians. We are a results-orientated salon and we pride ourselves on the fact that we help change people's lives. As the owner, my passion and interest is in helping people clear their acne though the salon as a whole offers a more comprehensive package including therapeutic facials, waxing, lash tinting and massage.

I moved into Fishtown in 2004 and had a very clear vision of wanting to help people with acne as I had been helped by an Esthetician in Florida. I wanted to open a salon in the neighborhood that I lived. At the time Fishtown apparently didn’t have a great reputation, but I was a recent transplant from Florida and didn’t know any better so I opened up right on Girard Avenue. I’ve gone from one room to five and been compelled to move and have landed on Frankford Ave., which is great.

 3. What is your hope for this area? What changes have you seen in the neighborhood that get you excited?

My hope for the area is that the sense of community does not dissipate. People in Fishtown and Kensington are truly wonderful about staying involved in local issues and events. I have lived all over the U.S. and I have not ever felt such a part of a community. I think it’s a gift to feel a part of your community. Anything that brings the community and diverse cultures together gets me excited.

 4.  Why did you become a Shop Local Partner? Why do you think the Co-op is important?

I was honored to become part of the Shop Local program of KCFC--who wouldn’t?! I think the Co-op is extremely important and I am also a member. It’s very important in that it will be bringing healthy locally grown food to our neighborhood every day. Being able to purchase fresh food daily is a really natural and nice way to shop and I’m SO looking forward to it. Co-ops provide lots of opportunities for multiple types of education, volunteer work and other community work. I think KCFC is the most exciting thing to be happening in the neighborhood right now and I’m looking forward to all the great happenings that will be taking place!!

 5.  What's the product/item you most hope to see at the KCFC when we open the doors?

Fresh locally grown organic produce. Fresh locally made organic breads would be amazing too!
